The
Cleveland Astronomical Society was established in 1922 and has a long
history
of providing free academic lectures to interested individuals. The
lecture programs are presented by educators, engineers, and researchers on
topics
related to astronomy and aerospace. Unlike a number of astronomical
organizations which concentrate on using their telescopes for night sky
viewing,
C.A.S. focuses on indoor scholarly forums of expert presentations.
The
C.A.S. Outreach program makes a concerted effort to encourage astronomy
teaching and learning by inviting local high school science teachers and their
students to various dinner/lectures. There they will be exposed to
astronomical
research work that employs the practical application to the
scientific research
process. The Outreach program also allows teachers to
network with other
teachers, students to socialize with other students and for
all to be exposed to
an academic lecture event outside the regular classroom
experience.
C.A.S is also a co-sponsor of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History's
Frontiers of Astronomy Lecture series. This
is also a free and open to the public
lecture series which is held at the
museum in the Murch Auditorium. On clear
evenings, the Museum's Ralph
Mueller Observatory is open afterwards.
The C.A.S. Library is also
stored and available at the Shafran Planetarium
for C.A.S. members.
