Speaker: Matthew Melis
Ballistics Engineer, NASA Glenn Research Center
Cleveland, Ohio

Matthew Melis was the technical lead for NASA Glenn's Ballistic Impact Team, both for the Columbia Accident Investigation and for NASA's Return to Flight program.  In our final CAS talk of this season, Mr. Melis will provide a behind-the-scenes perspective on the impact analysis and testing conducted to identify the cause of the February 1, 2003, Columbia accident.  The Columbia broke apart during reentry, resulting in loss of the vehicle and its seven crew members. The independent Columbia Investigation Board (CAIB) concluded in August, 2003, that the most likely cause of the loss was a breach in the left wing leading edge Reinforced Carbon-Carbon (RCC) thermal protection system.  The breach was caused by the impact of thermal insulating foam that had separated from the orbiters' external fuel tank 81 seconds into the launch.  Mr. Melis will use high-speed motion pictures and other rich imagery as he gives us a look into the inner workings of the Space Shuttle, the accident, and highlights from recent Shuttle missions.  If you have your own questions about the Columbia accident, this is an excellent time to address them to an expert investigator.
