We
live in a universe where massive structures -- galaxies and galaxy clusters --
grow "hierarchically", as little things form first, and then merge
together to form bigger things. Under this picture, how
then do we explain the wide variety of galaxy types we see? Dr. Mihos will
talk about the building of galaxies and galaxy clusters, showing how both
theoretical simulations and observational data from ground and space based
telescopes are coming together to improve our picture of (and raise new
questions about) the growth of structure in the universe.
